Swimming Cyclones

In the month of April 2020, Makhluk Seni kicked off #HomegrownMakhlukSenis with 10 days of prompts, mindfulness activities and goals to help us get through the isolation.

Self-care is something that I struggle to grasp, self-value seems to be a thing I don't understand or can't maintain according to some people. I see myself as a martyr for a reason and it was never a negative thing for me but it may have put me in certain dispositions were I get taken for granted or used. I feel that I give in to circumstances too often and will always choose others first before myself.

Day 7 Why Balut Nangka? | #HomegrownMakhlukSenis

Dressed in white or blue, some are in green.⠀

To the lalat buah, protected and unseen.⠀

The mangga asked the nangka,⠀

“What designer are you wearing, eh?”⠀

Dear Makhluk Senis, we ask you: From homemade masks to medical face shields, How is your community caring for one another?

We took a nose dive and we struggle to not drown in the waves

The currents draw us through cyclones of suffocation

The light from above shines through so the surface is near

We are running out of air, still fighting, still swimming.

Striving not to lose consciousness,

not to get lost in the turbulence

Oxygen masks have dropped,

We second guess if we should save ourselves first or others around us

If we don't do the latter we suffer from survivors guilt

If we do, how are we to save them if we lose ourselves in the long run.

Our battles can be marathons or sprints,

How we choose to run datelines our rate of success,

We last as long as we can within our capacity

We are made of bones that grow weary

Joints that shock with each landing

Muscles of fibres that carry electricity.

Lighting strikes the ocean

Breaching open wounds and tearing through scars

Bleeding within memories and emotions

Onces discharged, there is a chance to heal

Recovery can find its way from within

Mending layer by layer till the surface

Sutures melt away like ice caps and set in back to the sea.
