STOP! DROP! and ROLL!

I wrote this spoken word piece for the October Walls show as a part of Mental Health Awareness month. Hoping that this will help those going through a hard time find comfort and peace in the midst of their struggles. Stop, drop and roll is the step you need to put out the flames when you catch fire.

Stop drop and roll
the dice of stolen time
These dots of missing odds
Doubled by the unpredictable chance
When falling is a must but landing on the right numbers is always a gamble
The is no right answer
for the mind tricks we play on a dime.
The consequence is more than we can handle.

Stop, drop and roll
Down this hill recklessly
When you have lost control
Tumbling down rapidly
Down a cascade
Chaffed by barricades
Scratched by sticks
Scabbed by stone
Caught by your own broken bones.

Stop, drop and roll
Out the list of things you found
Uneasy about your soul
The things that bind the soles of your feet
keeping them from being planted on the ground.

Stop, drop and roll
into the mud pit of unreasonable thoughts it is like a quicksand
The more you struggle
The more it engulfs you
The quicker your panic becomes real
The harder it is to stand
The more difficult it is to see the end.

Stop, drop and roll
Up your sleeves
Looking at your heart dangled
At the edges of your wrists
Your mind like unhinged cuff links
Separated from one another
Unable to bear with the forgiveness
You need to give to yourself
The self care of buttoning up your sleeves
just so the atmosphere can't burn your skin any further.

Stop, drop and roll
a cigarette
Take a deep breath
And search for the oxygen molecules hidden amongst the trouble
Weave out the tobacco and find clarity
amongst the puff of smoke of ridicule
That your daily life blows at you
The regret in the high you find in this slow death.
Is Nicotine the consolation prize we give ourselves for our anxiety?
One day there will be a call.

When a life catches fire
STOP. DROP. and ROLL.
Some days you need to stop.
Drop everything
And roll out a mat
Because your friend will need you
a safe space
That no one can replace
They will need you to be there
When they can't be present for themselves
When their present is haunted by their past
And they can't get past the present
state of being haunted.

When you feel overwhelmed.

Stop, drop and roll
into a blanket
A warm embrace
Where the wool will erase
Every tinge of discomfort for a moment
A safe place exactly where you belong
A wrap that fits you perfectly
where your skin doesn't feel foreign
and your body is an accepted shape
A covering that stays close to you
like a mother's first contact with her baby.

Stop, drop and roll
your tongue into speaking good things to yourself
Affirmations and words of restoration
Fuel your life of parole
With good role models and don't patrol
stolen goals and empty homes
Be kind to yourself as you pass every toll
It's a price you pay on your journey to be whole.
