You Can Get Used To Anything

As people, we are constantly adapting to new situations, new places, and new people. This is about how over time, you come to get used to pretty much anything. Even when a wrench is thrown into your plan, as the days go by, you will learn to get used to new feelings, new situations, and new anything.

It is funny how though humans are creatures of habits,
You can get used to almost anything.

You can get used to that pleasant feeling a person gives you at the beginning of a relationship,
That feeling that makes you believe this might be different and forever,
You get used to their little quirks, their little mannerisms,
And that feeling of annoyance when their mannerisms tick you off.

You settle into that familiarization of having that person around,
And their odd stuff that is strewn around eventually blends into your space,
You accept the fact that your space is now shared with someone else,
And you don’t think twice when you have to make space, in your space.

You get used to having clothes that don’t belong to you hang in your wardrobe,
And you sometimes on lazy days put on the stolen oversized t-shirt without a second thought,
You find yourself okay with the fact that there is now extra laundry to do,
And that you now have more t-shirts that don’t fit you above everything else.

You get used to the sound of this person’s voice,
Changes of intonation and the low rumble of their laugh,
It’s like those songs you replay over and over again,
You can hear it even when it’s not playing.

You will realize in time the things you didn’t even notice you had gotten used to,
Like how you feel when you get into an argument,
You’re now an expert in when to respond and when to keep quiet,
And more importantly you’re used to the pain that follows.

You get used to the look on your friends’ faces when they see you,
And you brush off their subtle remarks of disapproval,
You delude yourself into believing it’s fine and that it’s not actually that bad,
And you get used to the void of silence where your voice used to be.

Then one day, you end it, and throw yourself into a loop.
You end up packing up all the things you got used to,
The little trinkets, the odd things lying around,
Around your space and in your mind.

At first it feels weird, slightly awkward, a little too much freedom,
You miss the familiarity of it all,
But then you remember, you can get used to anything,
Eventually, you’ll get used to this too.

SB is a conflicted soul of sorts, who is mad enough to go chase after what she really loves as opposed to conform to society and her mother's idea of a successful person. She prays she makes it in life, because she will not be able to tolerate the nagging that would follow if she doesn't. Her inspiration comes from everything around her, as well as made up situations in her head. Good luck distinguishing between the two.
