From SY: Someone You Want To Give A Second Chance To

Some things never chance and when it is too late, we are always filled with regret. For now, while there is still time left, I may not get a second chance but I can do it right from now on.

Dear Mdm. Tang,

The last of your generation,
A pioneer of our blood line,
One of the firsts to reach this nation,
Along with the labourers of tin mines.

How my lineage from you started,
Still remains a mystery,
Since your memories have now parted,
It shall forever be just history.

You lived decade after decade,
Across the many struggles you survived,
With just a door as your barricade,
Away from the Japanese you stayed alive.

Your mind as sharp as a laser,
Tongue as spiteful as the devil,
You were never a people pleaser,
Your words felt like falling into an ant hill.

Days of your life weren't always misery,
Generally your children treated you well,
Why is it only bitterness you see?
Far away from grace is where you fell.

Your outlook is mostly grey,
Even when the canvas is painted with colour,
Despite anything others say,
You would argue on every single matter.

My memories of you as a loving caretaker,
Were rather brief and clouded,
As time went by, we drifted apart further,
Happy exchange of words never lasted.

Harsh tones and foul phrases,
Escalated till I threatened to leave,
Accompanied by scowling faces,
You had no remorse nor did you grieve.

We hardly spoke anymore,
Except for the times you fell ill,
I would hope it would not be like before,
Instead your expressions got worse still.

Now, you aren't as clear as the blue skies,
Unable to differentiate dream and reality,
You are filled with paranoia and lies,
Dementia stricken conversations with mockery.

Too late it was for me to have more grace,
I should still love and respect you,
Genuinely, I do care when I wipe your face,
Regardless of the things you say or do.

Every time I put you to bed,
Hold you up and help you ambulate,
'We should have's fill up my heavy head,
We should have gotten a second chance instead of debate.
