Fleeting Fancies

We all have those "almost" people. Those people who aren't really friends, aren't really romantic interests, but are there and grasp our attention despite the fact that we know they don't deserve it. We allow ourselves to be available at their every whim. Well, this poem is to remind you, that you deserve more than just fleeting people in your life.

I deserve better than a 2am text message asking if I am awake.
Asking me what is going on & what is the latest update.
I deserve more than a "Yo" as salutation,
And when I receive such a text, I deserve to be in a state of agitation.

I have a right to care very little for men who blow in and out of my life like the wind,
I shouldn't have a reaction every time the wind blows them back my way,
The flame was never put out - just dimmed,
But that shouldn't give them the power to affect my day.

I don't need to open up every time someone reaches out,
After weeks of unresolved silence,
I reserve the right to suspect and to doubt,
Because mind games are a form of emotional violence.

I am a flawed woman but this doesn't demean my worth,
My time & my affections are still precious commodities,
So men with their Almosts and Maybes can very well drop off this Earth,
I will not accept indecision as mere traits of oddities.

If you want to love me, do it right,
Love me abundantly even when it is hard,
If not, you would do well to get out of my sight,
Because fleeting fancies don't deserve a permanent place in my heart.

SB is a conflicted soul of sorts, who is mad enough to go chase after what she really loves as opposed to conform to society and her mother's idea of a successful person. She prays she makes it in life, because she will not be able to tolerate the nagging that would follow if she doesn't. Her inspiration comes from everything around her, as well as made up situations in her head. Good luck distinguishing between the two.
